Even though the disease is highly contagious and sometimes fatal, not everyone needs to be tested for COVID-19. If you think you should be tested, GatherWell in Ham Lake, Otsego, and Edina, Minnesota, offers COVID-19 testing for your safety and convenience.
Here’s what you should think about when you’re considering getting tested.
Do you have virus symptoms?
People have reported symptoms that range from mild-to-severe to life-threatening. Within 2-14 days after exposure to the virus, you may experience these symptoms.
- Chills
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Persistent cough
- Shortness of breath
- Nasal congestion
Some people suffer from gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Your sense of smell and taste may also decrease when you have COVID-19.
If you experience any of these symptoms, you should be tested. If you develop sudden shortness of breath or have difficulty breathing, seek emergency medical attention from the nearest hospital or by calling 911.
Have you been exposed to COVID-19?
You should get tested if you’ve been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or who is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
If you’ve been exposed to someone with COVID-19, you should plan to isolate yourself while you await the results of your test and for at least 14 days to prevent the possible spread of the virus.
Do you have a job that puts you at risk?
If you’re on the front lines of pandemic relief or treatment, or if you work around people who are sick with the virus, you should seek a COVID-19 test for your, and your employer’s, peace of mind. Some employers may even require a COVID-19 test.
You may also need testing if you’re traveling and if you’re undergoing surgery.
What should you do if you test positive?
If you test positive for COVID-19, the GatherWell medical team can recommend the best methods for recovery. Many people can recover from mild symptoms at home without medical intervention.
If your symptoms grow worse as the virus progresses, you may need retesting and additional medical care.
If your test results for COVID-19 are negative, you weren’t infected at the time of your test. If you develop symptoms later, you will need to be retested.
